When statue of poet Louis Camoes in Goa was removed... This reminds me how a statue of celebrated literary giant Luis Vaz de Camoes in Old Goa was removed in 1980s, two decades after Goa was liberated from the Portuguese regime. There is an important circle in Old Goa no visitor to this former capital of Goa under the Portuguese regime will ever miss. This circle is at the entrance of the impressive Se Cathedral, the white 17th century edifice and the largest church in Old Goa. मांडवीच्या काठावरचा गोव्यातील तो ऐतिहासिक फोटो दै. द नवहिंद टाइम्स, १० ऑगस्ट १९८४मधील लाठीमाराचे छायाचित्र Sat , 27 June 2020 पडघम माध्यमनामा द नवहिंद टाइम्स The Navhind Times गोवा Goa लाठीमार Lathicharch त्या दिवशी सकाळी पणजीतल्या सचिवालयापाशी आणि आजूबाजूला  कडक बंदोबस्त होता. त्या काळात म्हणजे १९८०च्या दशकात मांडवी नदीच्या तीरावर असलेल्या सोळाव्या शतकातील आदिलशहा पॅलेस गोवामुक्तीनंतर सचिवालय म्हणून वापरात होता. गोवा, दमण आणि दीव केंद्रशासित प्रदेशाचे मुख्यमंत्री, त्यांचे पाच-सहा सहकारी मंत्री आणि सर्व ज्येष्ठ सरकारी अधिकाऱ्यांचे ते कार्यालय होते. असे असले तरी तेथील सुरक्षा व्यवस्था त्या काळात अगदी किरकोळ असायची. म्हणजे मुख्यमंत्री, मंत्री आणि ज्येष्ठ सरकारी येता-जाताना तेथे असलेले चार-सहा बंधूकधारी सुरक्षारक्षक त्यांना खाडकन मानवंदना देत असत. बाकी वेळेस सामान्य लोकांची ये-जा होत असताना कुणाचीही साधी चौकशी व तपासणी होत नसायची. हा, गोवा विधानसभेचे अधिवेशन चालू असताना थोडी कडक सुरक्षाव्यवस्था असायची. मात्र ९ ऑगस्ट १९८४ रोजी अधिवेशन नसतानाही सचिवालयापाशी असल...

मांडवी पुलाची संग्रहित छायाचित्रं पणजी-म्हापशाचं ‘लॉकडाऊन’ झालं, गोव्यातला मांडवी पूल कोसळला तेव्हा… पडघम  - माध्यमनामा कामिल पारखे त्या दिवशी सकाळी नेहमीप्रमाणे मी ताळेगावहून पणजीला जाणाऱ्या बसमध्ये बसलो होतो. त्या काळात म्हणजे १९८०च्या दशकात सांत इनेज- ताळेगाव- करंझले- मिरामार -पणजी अशा मार्गे बस जात असे. ‘नवहिंद टाइम्स’चा बातमीदार म्हणून मी साधारणतः सकाळी साडेनऊला पणजीतल्या सचिवालयातल्या प्रेस रूममध्ये जात असे. त्या दिवशी आम्ही काही प्रवासी त्या खासगी बसमध्ये चढलो आणि कंडक्टरने ती धक्कादायक घोषणा केली - “सोगळे ध्यान द्या हांव कित्ये सांगता त्ये. पोणजिचो मांडवीचो पूल मोडलोय. म्हापश्याचे अन नॉर्थ गोयांक आता सोगळी बस बंद असात.” बहुतेक प्रत्येक बस स्टॉपवर तो ती घोषणा करता असावा. कंडक्टर काय सांगत होता त्याचा मला अर्थ स्पष्ट होण्यास काही क्षण जावे लागले. इतकी ती धक्कादायक आणि भयानक घटना होती. पणजी शहर हे मुंबईसारखेच एक बेट आहे, अनेक बाजूंनी पाण्याने घेरलेले. म्हणजे एका बाजूने मांडवी नदीने, दुसऱ्या बाजूने झुआरी नदीने आणि बाकी अरबी समुद्राच्या पाण्याने घेरले...

Now, the latest row is over the medium of instruction in government-funded schools. For the past few months, Bharatiya Bhasha Suraksha Manch (BBSM), an association affiliated to the Sangh Parivar, has been spearheading an agitation to seek an end to government grants to the English medium schools. The BBSM wants the government grants to be given only to  schools having Marathi or Konkani as the medium of instruction.
