Rerouting Sofia-Moscow-Delhi flight     ``There are only two seats in Aeroflot airlines available for rerouting Sofia-Moscow- Delhi flight to Sofia-Rome-Delhi flight. The additional charge for rerouting will be Bulgarian currency 10 Lev. ‘’ Three of us Indian journalists had arrived at the Aeroflot office in Sofia when we learnt that we could change the route of our return flight to India and also get a transit two-day transit visa to visit Rome. A group of 30 journalists drawn from various English, Hindi and other languages and also from different states in India was completing a certificate course in Bulgaria. This incident dates back to April 1986. The journalism course was organised by the International Organisation of Journalists (IOJ) and the candidates were selected by the Indian Federation of Working Journalists. In 1980s, the IOJ used to organise such journalism courses every year in various USSR-allies East European nations like West Germany, Italy, Czechoslovakia, Rumani

Role of  Santa Claus    It was the Christmas in 1985 in Lucknow when for the first time I played Santa Claus to a group of 50 journalists drawn from all over India. We were camping there for a three-month diploma course in journalism, organised by the International organisation of Journalists (IOJ) in association with the Indian Federation of Working Journalists (IFWJ). I was also then the general secretary of Goa Union of Journalists. Those days, even in Goa, Christmas was not yet commercialised by the market forces and the Santa Claus costume was not so easily available. In Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh, too, Santa Claus dress was not available at the Charbaugh railway station chowk’s busy market. Therefore, on the night of December 24, I had to sport a white beard and a moustache glued onto a cardboard paper. I used a long black overcoat. But none of the journalists campers minded it as this was the first encounter with Santa Claus for most of them. I remember the minimum te

Goa, Daman and Diu Goa, Daman and Diu have been a part of my life since my adolescence for several years. This is despite the fact that I had never visited nor was sure of the exact geographical locations of Daman and Diu tiny territories. Names of these two territories along with Goa have been included in my higher secondary certificate as this public examination was conducted from 1975 to mid-1980s by the Goa, Daman and Diu Board for Secondary and Higher Secondary Education. The only far remote connection I had to Daman and Diu was that these territories were part of Portuguese India, comprising Goa, Daman and Diu for over four and half centuries. This legacy of Portuguese colonialism had kept the three territories united even after Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru through a military action liberated these three areas from the Portuguese rule on December 11, 1961. After their merger into India, Goa, Daman and Diu turned a Union Territory although Goa was on Maharashtra’s coast
