  Mother Mary Comes To Me दोन दिवसांपूर्वी वाचून हातावेगळे केले. बुकर प्राईझ विजेत्या आणि भारतातल्या एक आघाडीच्या `लेखिका आणि कार्यकर्त्या' अरुंधती रॉय यांचे हे आत्मचरित्रावजा हार्ड बाऊंड पुस्तक बुक फेस्टिव्हलमध्ये डिसेंबरात विकत घेतले होते. अनेक आणि भरपूर (आणि स्वस्तातली) जाडजूड पुस्तके मी त्या बुक फेस्टिव्हलमध्ये घेतली. त्यासाठी जवळजवळ आठवडाभर दररोज काही तास मी पाय तुडवत अनेक स्टॉल्स पालथी घातली होती. आता ही पुस्तके कधी वाचून होतील ते देव जाणे. सर्वात आधी नारायण विष्णू जोशी यांचे 'पुणे शहरचे वर्णन' (प्रकाशन वर्ष १८६६ !) हे पुस्तक जोतिबा आणि सावित्रीबाई फुले यांच्याबाबत माझ्या चालू असलेल्या संशोधन कामामुळे सर्वात आधी वाचून काढले आणि त्यावर येथे लिहिलेसुद्धा. वर उल्लेख केल्याप्रमाणे अरुंधती रॉय यांची अनेकदा Writer-Activist अशी ओळख दिली जायची, तेव्हा हा शब्दप्रयोग त्यांना विचित्र वाटायचा. म्हणजे `पिवळा पिंताम्बर' या शब्दासारखी पुनरुक्ती आहे असे त्यांनी या पुस्तकात म्हटले आहे. मुखपृष्ठ     समाज फुटबाँलवेडा गोवा मंगळवार, २६ जून, २०१८         goo.gl/vrziXa      कामिल पारखे सध्या फिफा वर्ल्डकपमुळे फुटबॉल फीवर सर्वत्र चढलेला आहे. अर्थात गोव्यासारख्या छोट्याशा राज्यातील फुटबॉलप्रेम यापुरते मर्यादित नाही. ते गोमांतकीय संस्कृतीत खोलवर रुजलेले आहे. गोव्यातील शालेय किंवा महाविद्यालयीन जीवनात कधीही फुटबॉल खेळली नाही अशी व्यक्ती सहसा सापडणार नाही. अनेक घरांत गिटार वाजविणारी तरुण मुले आणि मुली आणि ज्येष्ठ नागरिकही असतात, त्याचप्रमाणे या छोटयाशा राज्यात  घराघरांत फुटबाँलही असतो. गोवा ही चारशे वर्षांहून अधिक काळ पोर्तुगीजांची वसाहत होती, त्याचा हा एक परिणाम. पावसाळा संपला आणि मोकळ्या मैदानांवरचे पाणी जमिनीत जिरले, भाताची शेते मोकळी झाली की मग तेथे सकाळी आणि संध्याकाळी शाळकरी मुले आपल्या कोचसह फुटबॉल खेळू लागतात.  फुटबॉलचा हा सराव कधी आंतरशालेय स्पर्धांसाठी असतो, कधी कुठल्या स्पोर्टस क्लबने आयोजित केलेल्या टुर्नामेंटसाठी असतो. मात्र हे दृश्य तुम्हाला पणजी, म्हापशासारख्या शहर...
