निवडणूक चिन्हे टी एन शेषन निवडणूक आयुक्त होण्याआधीची ही गोष्ट आहे. काळ साधारणतः सत्तरच्या दशकाच्या सुरुवातीचा. श्रीरामपुरात काही मोक्याच्या जागी आणि रेल्वे रुळांच्या बाजूला असलेल्या घरांच्या भिंतींवर आणि इतर बांधकामांवर पांढऱ्या रंगाच्या पार्श्वभुमीवर काही चिन्हे आणि घोषणा लिहिलेल्या असायच्या. त्यापैकी एक बैलजोडी असायची, गायवासरू असायचे, शहरी भागांत मिणमिणता दिवा असायचा. अनेक चित्रांत लाल रंगातलं विळा-कणीस हें चिन्ह असायचं, काही ठिकाणी विळा आणि हातोडा हे चिन्ह असायचं. देशातल्या लोकसभा आणि महाराष्ट्रातल्या विधानसभा निवडणुकीत रंगवलेल्या या चित्रांवर विविध पक्षांची ही निवडणूक चिन्हे, पक्षांची आणि उमेदवारांची नावे असायची. तर यापैकी बैलजोडी हे चिन्ह होतं मोरारजी देसाई वगैरे नेत्यांच्या संघटना काँग्रेसचं. देशाला स्वातंत्र्य मिळाल्यानंतर पहिल्यांदाच काँग्रेसमध्ये फार मोठी म्हणजे सरळसरळ उभी फूट पडली होती आणि पंतप्रधान इंदिरा गांधी यांना आपल्या गटासाठी बैलजोडीऐवजी नवे गायवासरू हे चिन्ह घ्यावं लागलं होतं. सन १९७१च्या सार्वत्रिक निवडणुका इंदिरा गांधींनी हे नवे निवडणुक चिन्ह घेऊन लढवल्या आणि...
