PUNE: A large number of devotees are attending the ongoing novenas in honour of Our Lady of Good Health, Vailankanni at various churches in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad. The feast of the nativity (birthday) of Mother Mary will be celebrated on September 8.
Pune Bishop Thomas Dabre will celebrate the feast mass at St Ignatius Church at 6 pm on September 8. St Ignatius Church, Khadki, established in 1833, is one of the oldest churches in Pune. It was also the first church in the city to introduce the novena prayers and celebrate the feast of Our Lady of Good Health, Vailankanni.
Bishop Dabre will celebrate the mass at Our Lady Consoler of the Afflicted Church in Pimpri at 6 pm on  September 6. Fr Roque Alphonso will celebrate the feast mass at St Francis Xavier Church in Chinchwad at 6 pm, on September 8.

The monthly is celebrating its 175th year here on Saturday, June 3. Dnanodaya fortnightly was founded by the American Marathi Mission’s clergy in Ahmednagar by Rev Henry Balentine, a scholar in Greek, Latin, Sanskrit and Marathi languages, on June 20, 1842. The fortnightly was later converted into a monthly. Presently, it is published from the city and is edited by Ashok Angre. Balentine edited the periodical from 1842 to 1845 and again from 1858 to 1865. The other American missionaries who edited the Marathi periodical for many years included Robert Wilson Hume, Dr Samuel Fairback, Dr Allen Hazen, Charles Park, Edward Hume, Robert Hume and Justine E Abbot. A nonagenarian inmate, Francis, rings the bell at 5 am and another day begins for the destitutes who are helped and cared by the nuns of the Missionaries of Charity who run the centre.    The inmates belong to various religions and a few of them join the nuns in the chapel in their morning prayers. All inmates then join for breakfast in the dining hall and those who are bedridden or unable to move, are offered the food at the bed in the dormitory.
