PUNE: Two Puneites are among the 220 delegates who are presently attending over a month-long 36th General Congregation of the Jesuits in Rome to give shape to the future activities of one of the most powerful and influential religious congregations in the world.

The two Puneites are Pune Jesuit Provincial Fr Bhausaheb Sansare and Fr Stan Fernandes, Delhi-based South Asia Director of the Jesuit Refugee Service.

The 220 delegates represent 16,376 Jesuits worldwide. Incidentally, Pope Francis is also the first Jesuit elected to the papacy and is also expected to be one of the delegates at the Jesuit conclave.

Fr George Pattery, former president of the Pune-based Jnana-Deep Vidyapeeth who is presently president of the Jesuit Conference of South Asia, is leading the South Asian Jesuit delegation at the conclave. The South Asian Jesuit delegation represents India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan and Afghanistan, comprising 46 members.

The 36th General Congregation is expected to provide a roadmap to the organisation for implementation in the immediate future.

In its 476-year history, the Society of Jesus has held 35 such General Congregations, and most of them were convened to elect a new leader on the death of the previous incumbent. The present General Congregation has accepted the resignation of Superior-General Adolfo Nicolas and elected Latin-American Fr Arturo Sosa Abascal (67) as the new superior general.

The conclave, which is expected to last six to eight weeks, will provide guidelines to possible solutions.

On returning from Rome, the delegates will have to elicit the support of the Jesuits in their respective provinces and translate the guidelines into concrete plans of action.

The Jesuits have founded many schools in Pune and other parts of Maharashtra. They presently run St Vincent’s High School and Loyola High School in the city.
