Pune: Fr Eddie (Edmond) Fonseca, who served as the vice-principal and later as the principal of Ornealla's High School in Pune Camp for a record 25 years, was felicitated on his 90th birthday here on Thursday.

The birthday celebration and felicitation of Fr Fonseca, organised by Ornella's High School, was also attended by a large number of  former teachers of the school.

The school's Principal Fr Jovian D' Mello, Fr Lui Heredia and Vice-Principal Joe Vaz who spoke on the occasion recalled Fr Fonseca's contribution to the educational field and molding of thousands of students who studied under him.

The gathering was moved when Fr Fonseca led the school's choir in singing the school's anthem which he himself had composed some decades ago.

Fr Fonseca had joined Ornella's High School as vice-principal in 1956 and later took the charge as principal in 1964. He held the post until his retirement in 1981. Fr Fonseca later also served as parish priest at St Francis Xavier's Church in Chinchwad,  St Joseph's Church at Ghorpadi and as assistant parish priest at St Anne's Church in Solapur Bazaar.

Ornella's School Vice-Principal  Joe Vaz  said, “Fr Fonseca is an extremely gentle person. The school's old boys however will remember how strict he could be.”

Fr Fonseca is presently residing at Vianny Home for the retired clergy at the Bishop's House.

A nonagenarian inmate, Francis, rings the bell at 5 am and another day begins for the destitutes who are helped and cared by the nuns of the Missionaries of Charity who run the centre.    The inmates belong to various religions and a few of them join the nuns in the chapel in their morning prayers. All inmates then join for breakfast in the dining hall and those who are bedridden or unable to move, are offered the food at the bed in the dormitory.
